An umbrella association of organizations in our Jewish community, the Jewish Federation is responsible for the United Jewish Campaign, UJA, Israel, the JCC of Wyoming Valley, United Hebrew Institute, Jewish Family Service, the Jewish Home, the Mikvah, the
Vaad Hakashrut and various national agencies. The function of the Jewish Federation goes beyond the fund-raising campaign and includes planning and budgeting, young leadership programs, education, media liaison, Jewish outreach, monitoring and
response, local resettlement of Soviet Jews, and community relations.

The JFS is staffed by a team of social workers and provides
counseling services to help our Jewish families of
every socio-economic level overcome problems which
interfere with a satisfying family life. Other programs
include Jewish Family Life Education, brief financial
assistance, student loans, kosher home-delivered
meals, Russian resettlement and Jewish Connection
(introduction service).

The Jewish Home is licensed as a skilled nursing facility
authorized to admit Medicare-approved patients. It
is the only long-term care facility in this area which
observes Jewish dietary laws and celebrates all Jewish
holidays.

United Hebrew Institute

The Mikvah Ritualarium is a pool built according to
exact rules of dimension and acceptable source of natural
water. It is used as a vital part of the Laws for
Family Purity, and as a necessary component for conversion
to the Jewish faith. For more information or to

Vaad Hakashrut

The Vaad Hakashrut is the communal body responsible
for Kashrut standards in our community. In particular,
it supervises Kashrut at the Jewish Community Center
kitchen and Snack Bar and the JCC Day Camp. It also
supervises the kosher kitchen on a per-affair basis at
the Woodlands Inn & Resort.

Bais Menachem is a relatively new and very unique
institution. More than just a Yeshivah, it is also a place
to learn how to live; through study and by example. A
caring staff provides individual attention to each student,
looking after his spiritual and physical needs.

Hadassah

Hadassah is the Zionist Women's Organization of
America with 385,000 members supporting medical
and educational projects in Israel and the United
States. Chapter activities center on Hadassah's
Israel projects and on fund raising. Chapter programs
and projects focus on Zionist affairs, Jewish
education, American affairs and youth activities.

Jewish Home Auxiliary

Founded in 1917, the Wilkes-Barre "Branch" continues
to be a vital link to the Jewish Home in Scranton.
Generations of local women have promoted and
advocated the need for the services and care provided
by the Home. Members support the Home by
raising funds to provide parties, picnics, dances,
Chanukah and birthday gifts, entertainment and
"keep-in-touch" visits to the elderly residents.

Talmud Torah

Since the founding of the United Hebrew Institute,
Talmud Torah Ladies' Auxiliary has become a funding
body for the United Hebrew Institute's
Shofar Campagin.

Jewish War Veterans-JWV\

Jewish War Veterans welcome any veteran of the
Jewish faith. Breakfast meetings are held on various
Sunday mornings. The JWV provides support
for all veterans and the VA Hospital.

Queen Esther Hebrew Ladies Aid Society

(QEHLAS raises funds which stay in the community
to fund interest free college loans and monthly contributions
to Jewish Family Service. It has a life
membership roll which is a who's who of local
Jewish history. The group socializes at luncheons
with brief business meetings and speakers on
Jewish solutions to social problems.

Zionist Organization of America - ZOA

The ZOA founded the Zionist movement, demonstrates
activist Zionism, and fights for the political
acceptance of the State of Israel. ZOA stands for
public action to strengthen U.S.-Israel ties, religious
pluralism, Jewish rights and Israel's security, and
economic independence of Israel.
