Spinning

Spinning has many health benefits, including weight loss, cardiovascular and muscle building. Many spinners agree that spinning is the best cardio workout you can do. During a 30 minute spin class you can burn 500 calories. In a short amount of time you can burn a lot of calories, thus affecting your health. Most other exercises would take at least double the time to burn so many calories. If you are looking to lose weight, there is no better option. IT's also no impact by nature so your fee and knees won't hurt. This makes spinning a great workout for people of all ages, even older adults with joint problems. Spinning even helps increase lung capacity and cardiovascular health. Classes are being held Tuesday and Thursday 6 am at the YMCA and on Sundays from 7 am-8 am at the JCC.

Northampton St. Basketball League

Bill Buzza, Recreation Director, Dan Messinger, Basketball Director

The Northampton St. Basketball League is organized by the Wilkes-Barre JCC and the YMCA recreational staffs for girls and boys ages 5 – 12 years old.  Practice sessions and Sunday games are held from November through March.  In April, the Mendy Rudolph Memorial Basketball Banquet will be held in the Weiss Auditorium at the JCC.  Steve Taren, founding father of the league and Bruce Weinstock, chairman have been instrumental in developing the combined leagues.

Participants are members of the WB JCC or WB YMCA and pay a league fee to play.  The program is divided by age groups.

5 & 6 Year Old Clinic:  This clinic is a setting for young boys and girls to receive instruction on basketball basics such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense.  The clinic is run by the JCC and YMCA staff as well as volunteer collegiate players from Wilkes University and King’s College.  The children play on lowered baskets and have fun while learning the skills needed to play basketball.  Every participant receives a team shirt.

7 – 9 Year olds:  This division is played by boys and girls on eight foot baskets.  There is no press defense or three point shooting allowed.  Because of the participants youthat this level the officiating is more lenient as players attempt to fine tune their skills in preparation for play at the next level.  Moreover, the official often provides on court instruction for players teaching them how to line up for free throws properly and how to correctly move with basketball in hand.  There is also an emphasis on the “team” concept as coaches establish a positive rapport with their teams providing instruction at both games and practice.  For most players, this is their first experience playing the game of basketball.

10 – 12 Year Olds:  The varsity division is played on 10 foot baskets.  Three point shots and press defenses are limited to the end of each half.  There are two officials assigned to each game at this level.  Coaches promote the idea of teamwork by guiding their teams through games and practices.  Attendance for both games and practices is expected as players begin to rely on each other.  This division is more competitive than the 7 – 9 year olds; however children are encouraged to play regardless of basketball ability.

JCC High School League

This league is for boys and girls ages 8th through 12th grade.  The fee is $65 and games are played on Monday nights from 6:30pm – 8:30pm in the JCC gym.

Lou Gutterman Memorial College Tournament

The Lou Gutterman Memorial College Tournament is held during the holiday break.  The tournament involves two games, college B vs. JCC Varsity, and college A vs. Senior Men’s All Stars.  This tournament is dedicated to Lou Gutterman for his dedication to our JCC Basketball program.  Uniforms are donated by Bruce Gutterman and the college A Team is coached by Bruce Gutterman.

5:30 Club:  A group for the “over 50” members.  Games are played Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 11:30 am in the JCC gym and there is no fee.
